Conjunction Junction
When two planets are close enough in the sky that their energies merge together, Astrology calls it a “conjunction”. A New Moon is a conjunction that happens every month, when the Sun and the Moon reach the same point in the same constellation.
In other words, on a New Moon, the Moon and the Sun will always be in the same sign. Tonight the Sun is in Capricorn, so the New Moon will be in Capricorn too.
But a conjunction is even closer than two planets just occupying the same constellation. There are 30 degrees to each sign. The New Moon is exact when the Moon hits the same degree the Sun is at. Tonight’s New Moon happens at the 14th degree of Capricorn. As of this writing (7pm pst), the Moon is only at the 10th degree, so we’re still in the dark of the Moon.
The Moon will hit 14 degrees at 1:03 am pst, this when both the New Moon and tonight’s Solar Eclipse will be exact.

One of the things that’s making tonight’s eclipse even more powerful is that just a few hours later (4:52 am pst) there will be another, much rarer conjunction in Pisces, between Jupiter and the planet Uranus.
These are two much slower planets, and they only hook up every 14 years (their next conjunction will be in Taurus in 2024). They’ve been travelling pretty closely since June 2010.
Jupiter represents expansion, and it tends to exaggerate the energy of the things it contacts. The planet Uranus represents independence and inventiveness. It tends to disrupt and bring sudden, sometimes chaotic changes to the energy of what it contacts. Both of these planets absolutely love their freedom, and something about them hooking up is a pretty good indication that the times they are a’changin.
This conjunction happens at the very end (28 degrees) of Pisces. Pisces is the last sign of the Zodiac, the 12th house of the unknown and the collective unconscious. So what’s happening in the sky right now is hidden beneath all of our thoughts and activity, it’s happening beneath the surface. We can feel it, but we can’t quite see it yet.
After merging tonight, both Jupiter and Uranus will be speeding up and moving on to Aries, which is a completely different energy. The first sign of the zodiac, Aries is all about initiating action. It’s the point where everything begins. The energy is loud and bold and assertive and it moves fast. We’re about to see a whole lot of activity as more and more planets enter Aries. (Jupiter will be first, entering the constellation on January 22 and by the time Uranus moves in on March 11, Mercury and Mars will already be there. The Sun and Venus will soon follow after that.)
Remember, it’s not like we’re going to see the effects of this conjunction at the moment it happens. It’s not like Jupiter will exacerbate the already shaky nature of the planet Uranus and there will be an earthquake at exactly 4:52 pacific standard time. But it’s definitely a turning point. We’ll be able to look back at these days from the upcoming crazy Aries springtime and see more clearly how and what things were starting to change. In the meantime, it’s all about paying attention.
The last time these two planets teamed up was in Aquarius in the winter of 1997, what happened in your life then?
(If you know your chart, look to the last degrees of Pisces and the middle degrees of Capricorn to see how and where these two conjunctions are happening for you.)

One last, really good side note: Venus, the planet that’s all about love and grace is at 28 degrees of Scorpio, another water sign. This means Venus will be “trining” (120 degrees away from) the Jupiter/Uranus conjunction. A trine is a beneficial, supportive aspect between the planets and Venus here during the eclipse, during the exact conjunction, is a good omen that the things that are changing will be bringing some of the stuff that Venus provides.
Let me know how it goes for you!
