NEW MOON ON MONDAY ASTROLOGY

Get lucky.  We’re currently on the dark side of the Moon in Libra, but once it hits Scorpio on Wednesday afternoon we’ll have a brand new, very auspicious, very intense New Moon.  Jupiter in Taurus will be opposite the entire situation, meaning it’s all about the big moves.  Mercury and Venus are currently travelling hand in hand through the last degrees of Scorpio and challenging Mars in Leo, a fellow fixed sign.  That means sexual tension all over the place, and watch for it to get talked about too.  Jupiter makes the second of three auspicious trines to Pluto Friday morning, bringing a lucky vibe to the entire week, but the trine happening in earth signs means we all need to take some concrete steps toward making that luck manifest – it’s not just going to happen out of the blue.  Now’s the time to start turning our biggest wishes into major intentions.  Wednesday’s the time to start making our moves.  Happy New Moon!

ARIES 

Your focus turns way more toward a relationship this week as your Mars ruler gets cornered by Venus and Mercury in oh so psychological Scorpio.  Watch for the deeper meaning in every conversation you have.  You’re all about keeping up with it, but be careful of trying to “win”.  Aries has a way of turning even the closest bonds into competition, but right now it’s way more about understanding the rules of the game.  Chances are, some innocent assumptions have very much been getting in the way of things.  Time to talk out the tangles. 

TAURUS 

Hold steady.  With Wednesday’s New Moon in your opposite sign and the square between Venus and macho Mars in fellow fixed signs, you might be feeling some pressure.  Keep your eyes on the road and you’ve got every chance of getting your gold.  The trine between Jupiter in your sign and powerful Pluto is enabling you to find your footing in the very strongest sense, and make some epic strides ahead.  As long as you keep it realistic.  This week, you’ve got way better chances going for fortitude over fancy. 

GEMINI

You’re feeling extra inspired in all sorts of ways this week as your Mercury ruler catches up to Venus in super sexy Scorpio.  Venus is all about attraction and chances are, you’re feeling nothing less than frisky.  Luckily you’ve got all the ways in the world right now to access your charm, as well as your bravado.  Absolutely use the opportunity, but wait for the weekend before making any big moves.  Next week’s contact with Neptune means anything that develops right now in the romance department is only going to keep getting dreamier.  

CANCER

Wednesday’s New Moon in Scorpio is the perfect time to start getting more people involved. You’ve been trying to show off your independence mojo in a major way, but chances are you’re doing it to the point of alienation.  Luckily this week, that’s easy to undo.  Watch for chances to do some re-bonding all over the place and remember that your closest connections are what matter most.  Even better, they’re exactly what will motivate you to keep pushing forward.  You’ve got way more luck on your side than you realize, use the workweek to manifest it. 

LEO

Mars the Warrior has been making his way through your sign since mid-September, bringing you massive amounts of energy.  Whether this has manifested as gumption or gregariousness, anger or assertion, depends on your specific situation.  Now’s the time to focus on using that drive in the most productive ways.  Wednesday’s New Moon in a fellow fixed sign is challenging you to show the rest of us exactly what you’re capable of.  Just remember, it’s more about showing up than it is about showing off.  Everything you’re doing right now is way more epic than you think it is.

The SUN moved into SCORPIO at 11:30 am (pacific daylight time). 

Scorpio is the Fixed Water sign.  Scorpio is stubborn, but it’s also strong, subtle, and sophisticated.  Ruled by Pluto, Scorpio goes way deep. It’s associated with investigation and psychology and the shadow sides of things.  

Scorpio rules the 8th House, the house of shared resources.  That’s sex, death and taxes - and all the things that everybody goes through and tries to never talk about. Scorpio’s not so scared of taboo.  Scorpio’s provocative.  Scorpio heals, it’s transformative. 

Here are some absolutely oversimplified ways planets might manifest when they fall in Scorpio (or the 8th House, or when they have significant contact with Pluto): 

The Sun: Intense persona. 

The Moon: Intense emotions. 

Mercury: Intense communication. 

Venus: Intense attraction.

Scorpio Season

All of Astrology is a combination of planets, signs, and houses.  The planets are the characters - they’re archetypes of basic energies that exist inside of all of us.  The houses are where things happen, which part of our lives.  The signs are the flavors of how things happen, they’re like genres. 

Right now we’re in Scorpio season.  Mercury and Venus are already there and the Sun will be there by the time the weekend’s over.  The Sun, Mercury, and Venus travel very closely together at all times, they’re the personal planets.  And as they take over sign to sign, the genre of each sign gets a little more prominent in our day-to-day world.  

Scorpio is dark.  Up here in the North it’s when all the leaves are dropping and things are slowing way down in preparation for a long and dreary winter.  Scorpio is the season of Halloween and shadows and the Day of the Dead.  Creepy things, the kind of stuff most of us don’t typically focus on, become more prominent and even celebrated.  Scorpio is scary movies.  Detective stories too.  

Any planet or point colored by Scorpio will have some shadow involved.  There will be mysteries, ghosts, and digging up secrets and bones.  The same is true of any planet or point in close contact with Pluto, the planet that rules Scorpio - or planets in the 8th House, the House that Scorpio rules.

Why Read the Horoscope for your Rising Sign?

Your Rising Sign (or more specifically, your “Ascendant”) is the sign that was rising on the Eastern horizon at the moment you were born.  

The Ascendant passes through all 12 signs in a 24 hour period, so even people all born on the same day can (and will) have 12 different rising signs.  

Think of it this way:  the Sun always rises in the East.  Anybody born at sunrise will have the same Sun and Rising signs, because the Sun was rising in the East at the moment they came into the world.  Likewise, if you’re born at sunset, you’ll have your Ascendant in the sign opposite the Sun on that day.  Today the Sun is in Libra, so a baby born at sunset would have their Ascendant in Aries, Libra’s opposite sign. 

The Ascendant is also the cusp of the 1st House, in other words, it’s the very first point on the birth chart.  It’s the doorway.  The beginning.

When Astrologers write horoscopes, they’re faced with the task of generalizing what’s going on for each of the 12 signs specifically.  You can’t see every single person’s individual astrological make-up, so you’ve got to be as wide open as you can with the interpretations.  Those interpretations are always based on the combination of planets, signs, and houses - but in order to know where the houses are, you have to have a chart.  And a chart has to have an Ascendant. So many Astrologers use something called a “Solar Chart” when writing horoscopes, a chart that uses the Sun as the Ascendant.  In other words, they use the first degree of Gemini as the Ascendant when writing the Gemini horoscope, the first degree of Leo for the Leo horoscope, Capricorn for Capricorn, and so on. .  .This works, but it can be misleading if you’re just beginning to learn Astrology.  

How often do you read horoscopes for your sign that say certain things will be going down in your partnership “house”, or romance “sector”, or “the money section of your chart”?  (Sidenote: my nemesis SM is famous for this and it drives me insane).

Let’s say you’re a Taurus with Pisces Rising.  You read your Taurus horoscope and it says that all sorts of great things are going to just be getting started in your love life because Venus is entering your 7th house!  But actually, since you’re Pisces Rising, your 7th house is ruled by Virgo, and Venus hasn’t been there for weeks. 

On the other hand, if you read for Pisces, your Rising Sign, and it tells you that Mars will be taking an extended retrograde vacation in your 7th House over the next several months, that’s more likely to be accurate. In a true natal chart, the Houses (sectors, areas, etc) are based on the placement of your Ascendant, not your Sun.   

Even more than all that - your Ascendant is your vantage point.  It’s your filter, the lens through which you see the world.  So it’s just as affected by any combination of energies in the astro-weather as your Sun (as is your Moon, your needs).

The more you start to understand what’s happening to your consciousness (Sun) versus what’s happening to your circumstances (Ascendant) or emotions (Moon), the better you’ll get to know yourself. 

And that is awesome.

Horoscopes for October 17-23, 2011

NEW MOON ON MONDAY ASTROLOGY

Things are getting exciting - now it’s up to all of us to make sure they don’t just get out of hand.  Last week’s opposition between Venus and Jupiter is echoed today by Mercury as it rushes to catch up with the planet of love and grace in the deep dark waters of Scorpio.  Jupiter is the force that exaggerates everything it comes into contact with.  In opposition to Venus last week, it brought values and attraction to the surface in a big way.  In opposition to Mercury now, it will really get people talking.  Mars and the Moon in Leo just before the weekend means they’ll probably be showing off as well.  The Sun makes a friendly trine to Neptune on Friday, putting a dreamy spin on the entire week.  Daydreams and reverie are absolutely called for, but be on the lookout for where you might be deluding yourself.   The Sun’s move into Scorpio on Sunday makes the season of shadows official.  Next week: the brand New Moon.

ARIES

Practice your craft.  Now is a good time to put some effort into any course of study or sharpening things. You’ve got more focus and patience for building up a solid foundation, and that’s exactly what you want to do before taking any kind of impulsive action.  Slowing down is never intuitive for Aries, but this week you’ll find it easier to do.  Even better, you know it will pay off in very big ways.  You’re about to enter a season that brings some major opportunities, and you want to be prepared for them.   

TAURUS 

You’re more ready than ever before to stay committed to what you’ve decided to pursue, but that could have you being way too hard on yourself, if not other people.  Watch out too, for using self-deprecation as a form of very potent procrastination this week.  Try to be creative about seeing where your strengths are, and what you might be projecting.  There’s a good chance the thing that’s attracting you so much about someone else is really all about the energy that you are putting out.   Don’t be afraid to talk yourself up a little. 

GEMINI

Now that you’re starting to see the benefits of keeping up with your commitments, it’s getting way easier.  You’re absolutely surrounded by people this week, and chances are, picking up on a lot more things you can do to make their days much better.  The best part is, that’s helping your days get better too.  Make the intention to keep it up.  Things are about to start happening even faster in your day-to-day world.  Be ready for situations where you might be asked to take the lead and remember:  it always helps to be entertaining. 

CANCER

Just start moving.  Even if you’re feeling weighed down or all sorts of stressed out – the remedy is as easy as taking some action.  If the problem is that you can’t decide which course of action to take, know that it’s more about getting started than anything else.  You’re able to accomplish whatever you put your mind to this week – don’t waste it seesawing between what ifs.  Watch for immediate (and maybe even big) results as soon as this Sunday.  Next Week: the New Moon in a fellow Water sign – things get more simpatico. 

LEO

It’s not so much about being an imposition as it is about figuring out how you best fit in.  This is a good time for not only taking inventory of what you can bring to the table, but also for categorizing those resources.  There are certain traits you need to learn to share with others, but don’t forget about what you need to keep for yourself – the things that sustain you.  Then there’s your basic creativity, your nature, which is both.  Thursday and Friday are perfect for anything you’ve been trying to initiate. 

VIRGO

Don’t go hiding back in your shell just yet.  You’re in the process of compromising with someone else in a way that brings both sides a brand new kind of satisfaction.  Keep taking steps in the direction of whatever got started last week and you’ll soon have a much clearer vision of exactly where it is you’re trying to go together.  Be careful about it, and mind your method, and remember things don’t have to be absolutely perfect right this very minute.  You’re about to have the kind of weekend where everything goes your way.

LIBRA

The trick is as easy as keeping it simple.  Watch out for over-complicating things this week, especially places and people who are merely serving as things to be enjoyed right now.  Sometimes, it doesn’t need to be anything more than that.  The more you start to see this for yourself, the more you’ll be able to apply that understanding to all sorts of situations and transcend things you might have thought would be haunting you forever.  You’ve been forced into following the rules for a while now, but you’re about to see some absolutely epic benefits. 

SCORPIO

Get ready to be surrounded by friendly faces for a while as the Sun prepares to initiate your birthday season.  The coming days are bringing all sorts of what you’ve been waiting for to be, as well as a new sense of establishing yourself. Don’t discount what you’ve done to get ready for this and how much you’ve learned about cooperation.  If you’re feeling reluctant about things getting more social, it’s important to realize that you’re only trying to protect yourself.  Keep remembering how well you’ve turned a certain vulnerability into a very treasured strength. 

SAGITTARIUS 

Too big for your britches.  Now’s a good time to remember that things can’t always be as exciting as you want them to, sometimes you have to find it for yourself.  Trying to see an adventure in even the most mundane of tasks this week will pay off way more than settling for bored.  Even better, it will help you feel things go a thousand times faster.  You’ll be proving how well you can weather the big stuff as soon as next week.  By then you’ll even be grateful for this week’s break in the action. 

CAPRICORN 

You’ve got more space to work in than you have for a while.  Get to it, just remember to hold on to all you’ve learned about balancing your time over the last few weeks.  You’re more concerned than usual right now about your resources but it’s important to realize that certain relationships are resources too.  Keep paying as much attention as possible to the people who really matter.  Even better, start noticing all the ways they’re making your life easier too.  You’re about to have a long string of days where things get smoother, but wait until Thursday to make any big moves. 

AQUARIUS

Talk your way through.  You feel like you don’t have enough of something to get yourself where you’re trying to go.  Whether that’s cash, creativity, or confidence depends on your specific situation.  In any case, don’t let it zap your ambition.  The more you can connect with the people around you right now, the more you’ll start to see that you have everything you need.  The only catch is that you have to really dig deep.  Find the courage to go farther in conversations and confrontations – it’s absolutely not the time to keep it superficial. 

PISCES

Read for last week.  Now that you’ve learned to discern between what’s yours and what’s not (as far as vibes go), you’re ready to get back to trusting your intuition, which at the moment, happens to be even stronger than usual. Now is the time to practice using your best judgment in every single circumstance.  You’ll be seeing way past the surface of things this week, but it’s a lot more about gathering information than it is about taking any action.  Start making plans to get things started as soon as next week’s New Moon. 

Venus opposite Jupiter

Venus (in Scorpio) makes an opposition to Jupiter (in Taurus) at 4:53 pm (pacific daylight time).  

Venus is all about what (and who) we’re attracted to.  Jupiter exaggerates the planets it contacts.  And right now Venus is in Scorpio ~ people are completely on the prowl. Jupiter’s in Taurus, and so is the Moon, so they’re also feeling all sorts of sensual. Taurus craves rich sounds and touch and tastes and smells.  It might be a super extravagant weekend. 

Indulge and enjoy it.  But remember, it’s just the weather.  There’s a whole lot of Neptune action coming up, as well as a pair of eclipses, and the potential for illusion (or even delusion) is growing bigger everyday.  At the same time, the Sun is still hanging with Saturn in Libra (their conjunction was exact yesterday afternoon), and that’s bringing a whole big dose of reality.  

Don’t forget anything you’ve figured out lately.  Keep doing the right thing.  And then go out and have a fuck yeah kind of weekend.

Mercury in Scorpio

Mercury moved into Scorpio at 3:52 am (pacific daylight time). 

Mercury is the planet that represents how we’re communicating.  The sign that Mercury’s in shows how communication is likely to manifest.  

Mercury’s been in Libra for the past two and a half weeks.  Libra’s an air sign, it’s social.  Mercury in Libra likes to talk. 

Scorpio’s a water sign, and Scorpio goes miles deep.  Mercury in Scorpio likes to investigate.  Watch for things to get a lot more significant for the rest of the month, and possibly a lot more surreptitious. 

Scorpio goes way beneath the surface.
