New Moon on Monday Astrology

Odd and Oddly Named

“I am sorry to have to report that Uranus is due to act up again in your eighth house … “

It’s hard to talk about Uranus.  The above quote from Susan Miller of Astrologyzone is typical phrasing that makes it impossible for even the most mature of us to not at least crack a smile.  (I tried to find the one where she said “Uranus is beaming the Sun with 10 thousand volts of light…” or something like that, but no dice).  Even the alternate pronunciations usually get a snicker or some kind of remark: “Uruhnous” just sounds like you have to pee, and “Urahnus” just sounds pretentious.

Uranus was discovered in 1781, the first planet to be discovered with a telescope.  Before that time, Saturn was the farthest out planet that we knew about.  So upon the discovery of the planet Uranus, it was decided to name it after the Greek god who was the Father of Cronus (Saturn in Roman Mythology).  The mythological Uranus was the God of the Sky, who mated with Gaia and hated the children that came from that union and trapped them deep in the middle of the earth.  Cronus later castrated Uranus per Gaia’s request, the genitals fell to the sea, and Aphrodite was born.  Yep, in Greek mythology, Aphrodite sprung from the balls of Uranus.

The energy of most of the planets we use in Astrology corresponds to the gods and goddesses they were named for.  But the planet Uranus is not particularly hateful or domineering, and it values its own freedom much more than locking anybody up, especially his own offspring.

Many astrologers say that the energy of the planet Uranus is much more aligned with the Titan Prometheus in Greek Mythology, who stole fire from the gods to share with the mortals.  Prometheus was known for his brilliance as well as his affinity with mankind, and both of these are characteristics very much associated with the planet Uranus.

The Astrological Uranus is a rebellious, erratic energy that brings surprises and sudden disruptions, quick breaks in communication.  It’s futuristic and forward, always a step ahead.  The planet Uranus rules Aquarius in Astrology, and is associated with eccentricity and individuality, just like Aquarius is.  The planet Uranus challenges us to be free.

The planet Uranus marches to its own drum too, with an off-center orbit that’s completely unlike any other planet in our solar system.  While most planets spin, Uranus rolls.  It has its own sense of East and West.

We can associate the three outermost planets (Uranus, Neptune and Pluto) with what was going on in the world at the time of their discovery.  Uranus was discovered during the American Revolution, when America was writing its own rules to break away from the British Empire.  It was also the Industrial Revolution, when invention after invention was springing up, and the knowledge of them spread faster than it ever had before.

The planet Uranus will be moving from Pisces into Aries on Friday afternoon.  Because slow-moving, outer planets stay in one sign for years at a time, whenever one changes territory it marks a significant shift of an era and of a generation.

Aries is all about action.  Uranus will be joining Jupiter and Mercury in the sign, and the Sun and Mars aren’t far behind.  Combine all that energy with the unpredictable nature of the outer planet Uranus and you can see how we’ve got some pretty crazy days coming up.  Mars is like a soldier, it can bring aggression, even war.  Jupiter exaggerates the energy of anything it comes into contact with, and the Sun and Mercury bring focus and communication.  Add the weight of the rebellious planet to the mix, and square the whole team off against Pluto (transformation) in Capricorn. Oh, and put Saturn the authority on the opposite side of the field in Libra.  Revolution indeed.

Ok fine, i’ll stop talking about Uranus.
